Oyster Tables Borssele V

As part of eco-friendly scour protection, these oyster tables were placed in offshore wind farm Borssele V in 2020, an innovation test location in support of the Dutch energy transition. 4 oyster tables were outplaced at two monopile locations, containing 000 oysters in total.

In this project, 4 oyster tables were placed, each holding 250 oysters. The oyster table consists of three stacked concrete slabs onto which adult oysters are glued. Two of the structures were perforated - the horizontal plates contain large holes - and two were not. The structure has a lifting eye and can be placed on scour protection or other stable surfaces. To the bottom part of the structure no oysters are attached, as there is more predation close to the seabed.

In July 2021, the structures were monitored, both by ROV as through lifting them out of the water. This showed that the oysters on the vertical parts of the structures do very well, but that the horizontal parts suffer from sedimentation. These results were used to improve the oyster table design for iterations that followed after this project.
