Oyster Tables

Solution

Our Oyster Tables are liftable structures that are designed to introduce adult reproductive oysters near offshore infrastructure, using offshore installation vessels. These structures are placed on hard substrates on the seabed. The introduced oysters stimulate oyster reef development, fostering local biodiversity and enhancing water quality.

Since 2018, Van Oord installed multiple versions of the so called Oyster Tables. These are large (concrete) structures to which adult oysters are attached. To restore or reintroduce oyster reefs, these structures introduce reproductive adult oysters (broodstock) to an environment where oyster reefs have degraded or disappeared. The reproductive adult oysters function as a local larvae pump, providing larvae to the environment that will settle on nearby hard substrates, and foster oyster reef formation over time. The reefs filter nutrients and pollution from the seawater, provide habitat, and function as a source of food. This attracts many other species and boosts local biodiversity.
