Droppable Oyster Structures
The innovative light weight Droppable Oyster Structures (DOS) are easy to install and do not require a large vessel of crane for installation. The DOS introduce reproductive adult oysters to degraded sites, where they boost local biodiversity, provide habitat, and filter nutrients from the water. The larvae that are produced by the oysters settle on nearby hard substrates, where they create a flourishing oyster reef over time.

These structures weigh up to 50 kilos to enable manual deployment by two people, and to allow use of any small vessel, such as a Crew Transfer Vessel (CTV). This provides high ease of installation, and as the deployment can be integrated in maintenance activities, the method is very cost-efficient.
The DOS introduce reproductive adult oysters (broodstock) to degraded sites in need of restoration. The structures are to be deployed on hard substrates on the seabed, such as rock patches. The larvae that are produced by the oysters will look for hard substrates to settle upon, where they will grow out into thriving oyster reefs over time, providing valuable ecosystem services. These reefs support many other forms of life by providing habitat, functioning as a source of food, and enhancing local water quality.
